Recently I posted a review of the FlexCCarry Course presented by Vicki Farnam of Defense Training International, and here’s a quick report on an alternate carry option we’ve been working with.
Purse/bag/day planner, etc., carry still requires the firearm’s trigger to be covered regardless of it being in a designated pocket. One method was created by Raven in the form of their Vanguard (and imitations by other companies), which is a trigger cover only holster with an attached lanyard made of paracord. The paracord is tied off somewhere on the bag, then, as the pistol is drawn, eventually the slack on the cord runs out causing the trigger cover to pull free from the pistol, exposing the trigger for use.
The problem with that choice is the pistol remains loose inside the bag, and even with a small pocket, the location and orientation of the firearm is always shifting. This leaves the ability to obtain a proper master grip a bit of a treasure hunt. Not optimal when immediate self defense is required.

Thus, it’s highly recommended that all pistols in bags be secured in a proper holster so they remain oriented in the same place and position each time the operator reaches for it. This allows for a proper master grip before drawing, and eliminates searching and fumbling
The issue there has been finding a satisfactory holster that can be adapted into a purse of bag gun pocket, as a standard belt holster with clips or belt-loops are not suitable for the task.
Serious manufacturers of off-body carry bags generally have at least one side of the gun pocket lined with Velcro. This allows for some existing holsters to be jury rigged with stick on Velcro and pressed into service – but, its still far from optimal.
Enter Crossbreed Holsters!
They have an entire line of holsters produced with a flat back and factory installed Velcro specifically for purse/bag gun pockets and belly bands that they refer to as the Modular Holster.
THEY ARE OUSTANDING!
Available in left and right-handed versions, they provide an answer to not only bag orientation on the body, but the issue of only one side of some pockets being Velcro lined. The holsters are firearm model specific, and offer positive retention, the same as any other quality holster
We obtained a number of the Crossbreed Modulars and have been working with them over the past few months with absolutely ZERO issues!
We’ve installed them in a number of bags and holstered unloaded guns in them – then, tossed them down, tipped them upside-down and shaken them, etc… All have held the pistols in place.
Crossbreed has Velcro backed magazine carriers, as well.
Highly recommended!
